Inflation monitor: Tanzania rises to 3.2%, keeping the BoT watchful
The latest reading interrupts the recent moderation in consumer prices — the key input for the BoT ahead of its next rate decision on 1 October 2026.
Consumer price inflation in Tanzania stands at 3.2% year on year in the latest reading tracked by CBAN, up from 3.1% in the prior reading.
The pickup narrows the room for manoeuvre around the Bank of Tanzania's 6% policy rate. Across African consumer price baskets, food and non-alcoholic beverages typically carry the largest weight, followed by housing, utilities and transport — which is why harvests and fuel prices move headline inflation more here than in advanced economies.
Currency dynamics feed directly into the outlook. The Tanzanian shilling trades near 2,640 to the dollar, down 1.9% this year — a headwind that keeps imported costs elevated.
Real GDP growth is running at around 5.6%, and official reserves stand near $5.6 billion. The next scheduled BoT rate decision is 1 October 2026.
