Inflation monitor: Kenya rises to 6.7%, keeping the CBK watchful

The latest reading interrupts the recent moderation in consumer prices — the key input for the CBK ahead of its next rate decision on 12 August 2026.

Consumer price inflation in Kenya stands at 6.7% year on year in the latest reading tracked by CBAN, up from 5.6% in the prior reading.

The pickup narrows the room for manoeuvre around the Central Bank of Kenya's 8.75% policy rate. Across African consumer price baskets, food and non-alcoholic beverages typically carry the largest weight, followed by housing, utilities and transport — which is why harvests and fuel prices move headline inflation more here than in advanced economies.

Currency dynamics feed directly into the outlook. The Kenyan shilling trades near 129.2 to the dollar, up 0.4% this year — a tailwind that dampens imported inflation.

Real GDP growth is running at around 4.9%, and official reserves stand near $9.1 billion. The next scheduled CBK rate decision is 12 August 2026.

CBAN tracks inflation across every African economy in the interactive inflation dashboard, updated as national statistical releases are incorporated into the dataset.
