Inflation monitor: Ethiopia rises to 13.9%, keeping the NBE watchful

The latest reading interrupts the recent moderation in consumer prices — the key input for the NBE ahead of its next rate decision on 29 September 2026.

Consumer price inflation in Ethiopia stands at 13.9% year on year in the latest reading tracked by CBAN, up from 13.4% in the prior reading.

The pickup narrows the room for manoeuvre around the National Bank of Ethiopia's 16% policy rate. Across African consumer price baskets, food and non-alcoholic beverages typically carry the largest weight, followed by housing, utilities and transport — which is why harvests and fuel prices move headline inflation more here than in advanced economies.

Currency dynamics feed directly into the outlook. The Ethiopian birr trades near 122.4 to the dollar, down 3.5% this year — a headwind that keeps imported costs elevated.

Real GDP growth is running at around 6.5%, and official reserves stand near $4.2 billion. The next scheduled NBE rate decision is 29 September 2026.
