Inflation monitor: Botswana rises to 2.8%, keeping the BoB watchful

The latest reading interrupts the recent moderation in consumer prices — the key input for the BoB ahead of its next rate decision on 21 August 2026.

Consumer price inflation in Botswana stands at 2.8% year on year in the latest reading tracked by CBAN, up from 2.6% in the prior reading.

The pickup narrows the room for manoeuvre around the Bank of Botswana's 1.9% policy rate. Across African consumer price baskets, food and non-alcoholic beverages typically carry the largest weight, followed by housing, utilities and transport — which is why harvests and fuel prices move headline inflation more here than in advanced economies.

Currency dynamics feed directly into the outlook. The Botswana pula trades near 13.5 to the dollar, up 0.6% this year — a tailwind that dampens imported inflation.

Real GDP growth is running at around 1%, and official reserves stand near $4.9 billion. The next scheduled BoB rate decision is 21 August 2026.
