Currency monitor: what is holding the Nigerian naira among Africa's firmer currencies in 2026
A 2.1% year-to-date gain against the dollar puts the NGN in focus for importers, investors and the CBN alike. Here is the data behind the move.
The Nigerian naira has gained 2.1% against the US dollar so far in 2026, trading around 1,495 per dollar. The move shapes one of the central questions facing the Central Bank of Nigeria: how much exchange-rate strength to accommodate while inflation runs at 15.91%.
Three forces typically drive an African currency's path, and each applies here. First, the interest-rate differential: with the policy rate at 26.5%, local-currency assets offer high nominal carry relative to dollar rates, which influences portfolio flows. Second, the current account: export receipts, remittances and import demand determine the underlying supply and demand for hard currency. Third, expectations: where inflation and policy credibility are improving, holders of local currency have less reason to hedge into dollars.
Reserves are the shock absorber. The CBN holds gross reserves of roughly $38.4 billion — the buffer available to smooth disorderly moves, service external obligations and anchor confidence in convertibility.
For households and firms the exchange rate is the single most visible price in the economy. A firmer currency feeds through to cheaper imported fuel, medicine and machinery, reinforcing disinflation. Predictability of the rate — as much as its level — is what businesses consistently identify as most valuable for planning.
From here, the NGN's path will turn on the same variables that brought it to this point: the CBN's policy settings, commodity prices, and the global dollar cycle — forces set far from Abuja but felt immediately in it. CBAN's currencies dashboard tracks the full continent.
